Good Friday tolling

Due to the short notice, no ringer could commit to tolling the fixed bell on the patio for the Good Friday service, when it is traditionally sounded 33 times.

The patio bell, muffled with a sock folded back in three layers.

The dean of the cathedral kindly offered to toll it, since he was going to be there anyway.

Following recent practice, the bell was muted with a tube sock over the clapper, turned back to provide three thicknesses of cloth.  The next day when the sock was removed it was completely beaten through on that side;  next year we need to use something sturdier.
